Seventy Five

I hate that name. Chandraneel is a hotel close to the place I stay at in Pune. The name is sad but the food they serve over there is okay. Three chapatis, a bowl of rice, one dry sabji, one wet sabji, dal, papad and curds in a dinner thali. There are a few places around that serve similar food, but they are always full and have bad SLAs when it comes to serving time. On the other hand, I always manage to get a table at Chandraneel and I am served within 10 minutes of ordering stuff, provided ofcourse I order the standard thali. So usually two dinners of the four in a week that I am forced to have outside home, I have food here. The waiters, dressed in dark green uniforms with ChandraNeel embroidered, are always polite and smiling when they take orders and serve. And this guy who serves at the wash basin end is the most smiling person at Chandraneel. That day, after i had finished my dinner, he came to me, to take cash. "Kitna Hua(How much?)", I asked, just for the sake of asking, being fully aware that the meal cost me twenty five bucks."Seventy Five", he replied with a smile. Surprised, I asked him the same question again only to be given the same answer. It was sometime before I realised that he was not well versed with English and thought "Seventy five = 25". The next time, I will correct him.

25 bucks, is this American dollars?? That is an awful lot for one dinner.
Neel, since I am not from India, and you said you hate the name, can you please translate for me. I am curious as to what the name means?

No Exseno. Not US dollars :-) I meant 25 Indian rupees. 25 rupees = 55 cents You get decent stuff for that much :-)

ChandraNeel in Hindi/Marathi means A blue gem. Had to google for it :-P I thought it meant a blue moon :-P

Thanks for the translation. A blue gem that is much nicer then a blue moon. lol

O.K. so 25 Indian rupees = 55 cents American money. If it is American money then I want to move to India because you can't even buy a package of gum here in the US for 55cents anymore.

hmmm...looks like ur 75 man was a confused soul like me. You see, I used to have trouble figuring out which was 2.5 in hindi; dhai or dedh; and once even ended up bargaining some 1.5 stuff for 2.5! (loong back when u could get things for tht money) Yikes!
Until one day they made a movie, which is otherwise forgettable, Dhai akshar prem ke...problem solved!

Dewdy : It's cheap. Not dirt cheap :-)

Sat : Even I had a problem with 1.5 and 2.5 in Hindi :-D

FWL : :-)

Bhagya : Not yet. I had moved to Pune from Bangalore, but have moved back to Bangalore for a brief time after which I will move to Pune again..Confused? So am I :-D

Keshi : Same here. But then, English aint the only language. These guys can speak the local languages with ease and that is what is more important to them. Learning English is not a priority for them as they do not need to interact in English.

Exseno : Do come :-)

Rohit : I agree...

Het : Will be back soon!

cne : :-D

Art : Kinda busy :-) Will be back soon!
