Taram Ching

Like all the other politicians, Dharam Singh wants to rename Bangalore to Bengaluru(or Bengalooru). Sick. Sick. Come 1st November 2006 and the name change will take effect. These politicians who have no other work to do have already renamed the city I love the most from Bombay to Mumbai. And now they are doing the same to the city which is second on my list of cities that I like. Ooru in Kannada means a village and the name change will ensure that government will find itself at ease while answering questions relating to Bangalore's poor infrastructure post 1st Nov 2006.

People : How can you explain the poor infrastructure in the city? It takes us 2.5 hours to travel 15kms.
Govt : City? What city? It is a village now. Forgot we renamed it on 1st Nov?We are infact about to start work to break down Hosur road and convert it into a mud road. It has been suggested by a Jnanpith award winner. You will have to use bullock carts to commute. And that way we can feel more closer to our culture, our tradition.
People : So how will we reach to our office in Electronics City?
Govt : Oooh! So you are the IT guys. B******s. You land grabbers. Most of you come from outside the state and speak Hindi. For your information, we are about to raise down all the companies in Electronic City and convert in into farmlands. That way we will feel more closer to our culture, our tradition.
People : (throw branded footwear at the govt)
Govt : You should not throw branded footwear at us. Remember the bill that we passed last month. From now on, you should only throw cow dung and pig dung at us. That way we will feel closer to our culture, our tradition.

Enough is enough. For how long should I tolerate these stupid politicians? For how long these people will continue to appease masses(there are people like that) by changing names and making them feel them closer to their tradition and culture. And I cannot do any thing about it. I have decided to rename Mr. Dharam Singh to Taram Ching. And I want that to be a democratic decision. Please cast your unbiased vote.

Please Note : Looks like Dharam Singh himself has voted. Before this guy voted, the results were 26 in favour of Yes and 3 in favour of No. Ignore that rigger.
dt : 23rd Dec 2005.
To the rigger : By overwhelming majority, he has been renamed Taram Ching

From Dharam to Taram
Do you support my decision to rename Dharam Singh as Taram Ching?
Yes
No

SSR, may be yes. I am not sure how much my personal letter is going to help considering he has got personal letters from Jnanpith award winners asking him to change the name. But I guess, I should do that. I wish I was in the opposition. Could have raised this issue for sure.

I was so darn upset when Bombay was changed and now Banglore, gosh the new name is so awful but I guess we'll get used to it just like we are to Mumbai now. I agree with Vidz, changing names is so weird and unreasonable, wonder whats gonna become of our world

Dewdy, I still call Bombay as Bombay. And I will continue to call Bangalore as Bangalore. Besides that, there is little I can do, except renaming Dharam Singh.

Hee hee! Hilarious :D They messed around with the names of my two hometown cities, Bombay AND Madras! And now they want to change the name of my favourite city? Seriously! Do you know what they did to poor VT station??? It's now Chatrapathi Shivaji blah blah blah. Everyone pretty much still calls it VT though :D

Someone should try telling Dharam Singh that the new name translates into "The village of the Bengalis". But for the time being, calling him Taram Singh instead sounds like a brilliant idea ;)

Ms V : Yup. Even I call CST as VT. And Bombay too will be Bombay for ever.

Het : Lol! Numerology? There is one numberologist, whom these filmstars go before they change their names. He must be making lots of cash by fooling them!

Dude, get ur fundas right. ooru in Kannada is not village. haLLi (as in bommmanahaLLi) is village. ooru - like the pur used in Samskrt (as in hastinapur) - means place, and in no way indicates anything remotely connected to a village.

This I guess is one of the biggest problems affecting B'lore today...a good no of stakeholders in the city r those who do not care abt their responsibilities. They do not vote, they do not even register as voters (so no meaning in looking at the voting percentage!), they do not care to learn the local language....but cribs can be found galore. Look at areas like Vijayanagar, Malleswaram, Basavanagudi and then look at areas like BTM, Koramangala. Except for the commercial infrastruture, the public infrastructre (roads, drainages, water) are much better in places where most of the residents are part of the voters group.

Instead of cribbing in blogs, how abt appealing to ppl to register as voters! The elections for B'lore city corporation r due in 2006 end, I hope u agree that nobody can do more than the city corporation to improve the city infrastructure.

Agree with you mate... Feel so angry about this name changing thing. WHat the hell Bombay to Mumbai - VT to CST - Madras to Chennai - Calcutta to Kolkotta - and now Bangalroe to Bengalurru,,, W.T.F is happening... Name changes - but what about the place... its going backwards like U said rightly...

Karthik : First of all sorry for replying late.
Just asked a friend who speaks Kannada what's ooru? He said village. When I read your line out to him, he says,"I dont know so much". Now, it is tough to get your fundas right when there are inconsistent answers to your query. Agree with you regaridng the civic infrastructure in old Bangalore. Btw, I went for Kannada classes and I can understand something atleast.
Anyway, FYI, I am leaving Bangalore in may be a month or two. So, no. I am not going to register as a voter here!

Bablu : Yeah. So many changes. These SoBs have nothing better to do.
